Emergency Dental Care

A dental emergency can occur when you least expect it. Any injury that occurs to the mouth, teeth or gums should not be taken lightly. If left untreated, it could evolve into something even worse. Anytime a dental emergency occurs, give our Oswego or Villa Park, IL office a call as soon as possible so we can advise what the best course of action is. There are some steps that can be taken during an emergency that can help greatly. Here are some emergencies you may encounter and some helpful advice:

Severe Toothaches

While you are headed in to have the dentist take a look at the tooth, it is recommended that you take a pain relief medicine such as Tylenol or ibuprofen. Remember that this is a temporary pain reliever and you still need to have the took inspected by a dentist.

Dislodged Tooth

If a permanent tooth has been moved out of its normal position, a cold compress can be applied to the outside of cheek. If there is also pain, take a pain relief medication to temporarily relieve it.

Knocked Out Tooth

The most important thing you can do when a tooth gets knocked out is to only pick the tooth up by the crown, and avoid touching the roots. Lightly clean the tooth with warm water. To preserve the tooth, place it in a small container of milk or keep it inside the cheek. Both of these methods will keep the tooth viable longer in hopes that the dentist will be able to set the tooth back in the socket.

For other injuries such as a broken or cracked tooth, a lost filling or lost crown, it is important to keep the area clean by rinsing with warm salt water. Always treat each emergency with the utmost importance and be sure to give us a call with any questions.
