What is gum graft surgery?

A gum graft is typically needed for patients who have receding gums. This can be caused by genetics, over brushing, or orthodontia. The procedure involves cutting the tissue from the roof of your mouth and then cutting the gums from around your tooth. Your dentist will then stitch up the new donor tissue.

The following are a few tips if you are planning on having a gum graft surgery.

  • Upgrade your drugs. Unfortunately, it is no secret that gum graft surgeries can be painful. Your dentist may offer you with a variety of options during your procedure to control your pain levels. Take your time to carefully decide which option will be the most comfortable for you.
  • Get a stent to help prevent bleeding. Your dentist may offer to provide you with a stent. A stent will cover the roof of your mouth. It helps by putting pressure to prevent bleeding, stops your tongue from playing with the stitches, and keeps food from getting caught. It is recommended to leave the stent in until your stitches are taken out.
  • Get the modern gum graft surgery. New innovations allow for the roof of your mouth to be stitched up. This gives you a more comfortable recovery period.
