Dental implants are a common and popular choice for fixing and restoring your teeth. They are used to restore proper speaking and chewing. Some patients may require a sinus lift before getting a dental implant procedure done. How do you know if you need a sinus lift? Read on to see the benefits of completing this easy procedure

Why You May Need a Sinus Lift

Not all dental implant patients are required to get a sinus lift prior to their procedure. How do you know if you will need a sinus lift? If you have missing teeth in your upper jaw, particularly if they are your molars, then your oral surgeon may say you don’t have enough bone to keep your new implants in place. If you have gum disease or several missing teeth, you may also have lost bone. You may also need a sinus lift if your maxillary sinus is too near to your upper jaw.

How a Sinus Lift Is Done

The bone needed for a sinus lift may come from either your own body, a cadaver, or a cow. To begin your procedure, your surgeon will cut the gum tissue where your back teeth used to be. Your surgeon will then expose the bone by lifting the tissue. They will develop a small window in the bone to push the membrane from your sinus away from your jaw. Your surgeon will then place the bone where your sinus used to be. After stitching everything back into place, the healing process will take four to nine months.
